Do you ever feel like you’re always cleaning your house but you still get a whiff of a faint odor here and there? Whether it’s coming from he kitchen, bathroom, or laundry, let’s dive into 5 problem areas that could be causing persistent odors in your home and how to fix them!
1. Dishwasher
Most of us use our dishwasher almost every day, yet we aren’t cleaning the actual dishwasher. It cleans the dishes with gallons of hot water, soap, and steam so it must be clean itself right? Wrong!
I hate to break it to you but dishwashers are nasty. They are filled with soap scum, residues and grime that build up and lead to a very smelly dishwasher, not to mention, dishware that isn’t really clean. Ideally you need to clean your dishwasher and most of your appliances, at least once a month to make them work their best and last longer. I swear by these dishwasher pods.
2. Garbage Disposal
There have been countless times I’ve walked into my kitchen and wondered where that horrible smell is coming from. I clean my kitchen CONSTANTLY and always clean my sink, until I realized I had to actually clean my garbage disposal. I found these amazing garbage disposal cleaner pods that instantly solved my problem.
3. Trashcans
Trashcans are not the most pleasant as it is, however, that foul smell is not just coming from food waste. Due to overflow and general use, garbage residue will build up in and around the trashcans causing them reek. Check out this article for a thorough step-by-step on how to clean your trashcans. Try to clean once a month to avoid build-up as well as mysterious smells.
4. Washing Machine
Cleaning the washing machine is probably my least favorite thing to do because of how messy it is and how terrible it smells during the whole process. It's also the appliance that I believe most people not only forget to clean, but don't know how to clean. I know I didn't until a few years ago and my mind was blown. That being said, once I did clean my washing machine, it worked so much better.
To clean the machine:
Front load machine: Run a cycle until the machine fills with wipe down the inner rubber rim and clean all the nooks with a paper or reusable towel.
5. Air Ducts
Like any other area or appliance in your home, your air ducts collect a lot of dust and debris, except since we, you know, breathe air all the time, not cleaning your air ducts and vents can be especially dangerous! It's the one place I always forget to clean until I look up at the air vents and am horrified by the dust collected on there. IYKYK *shutters*
Make sure you are cleaning your vents/grilles and swapping out your HVAC filters regularly. Also make sure you schedule routine cleanings for your ducts so there is no mold, mildew, or other gross build-up that can cause severe harm to your health!
P.S. - this goes for PTAC units and in-window ACs as well! Make sure you are cleaning them regularly so you don't have dust collecting on them and ultimately being blown throughout your entire home!
I hope this was helpful and got rid of the mysterious smell in your home!
Until next time,
